Yogi Calhoon grew up in Brookfield Village a section in Oakland that most people know it as where NBA Star Damian Lillard grew up at. Yogi explains how he's 3rd generation and learned a lot of his game from his brother and father. Yogi ended up losing his father at a young age due to gun violence. But, later down the line he ended up losing his brother as well to a motorcycle accident. He says it left in shock and wasn't able to mourn his brother's death because he had to tighten up his boots and get with the program. There was business that still had to handle at the end of the day and property that had to be taken care of. Yogi also talks about going back and forth from Cali to Texas because he had some family out there and whenever he was out there, he had to fight for his respect being from California.
Yogi Calhoon joined the Bay Area rap scene naturally due to the fact he was surrounded by other artist and people who owned their own labels. He mentions how he came up with the name Yogi Calhoon & he started off freestyling before taking music seriously. Yogi was really strategic with the way he moved but to him it seemed like common sense. Early on in his rap journey he managed to stay Indy and collab with some legendary names such as, Pretty Black, X-Raided, The Jacka, Keak Da Sneak, Lil Flip, Gucci Mane and the list goes on.
